Kozhikode, June 11, 2026: Kerala has been placed on high alert after a 43-year-old man from Kozhikode tested positive for Nipah virus in a preliminary screening, prompting health authorities to launch extensive surveillance and contact-tracing measures across the district. Confirmatory test results from the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, are awaited.
According to officials, the patient, a businessman from the Feroke area of Kozhikode, was initially admitted to a private hospital before being shifted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode. Health authorities said he is currently on ventilator support and remains under close medical supervision.
Following the preliminary positive result, the Kerala Health Department swiftly activated containment protocols. Teams have begun tracing and identifying individuals who may have come into contact with the patient, while several healthcare workers and others considered at risk have been advised to remain in quarantine.
State health authorities said the patient’s symptoms and initial laboratory findings strongly suggest a Nipah infection. Officials added that the patient had interacted with numerous people before being hospitalized, increasing concerns about potential exposure and transmission.
Authorities are preparing a detailed route map of the patient’s recent movements and have intensified surveillance in the region. Investigations are also underway to determine the source of the infection. Preliminary assessments suggest that the patient may have been exposed while cleaning a recently rented storage facility, though this has not been officially confirmed.
Nipah virus is a highly infectious zoonotic disease that is primarily spread by fruit bats, its natural hosts. Human infections can occur through direct contact with infected animals, contaminated food, or infected individuals. The disease can cause severe respiratory illness and brain inflammation, with a relatively high fatality rate.
Kerala has experienced several Nipah outbreaks since 2018, particularly in Kozhikode and nearby districts. Drawing on its previous experience, the state’s health machinery has moved quickly to implement preventive measures and strengthen surveillance.
Health officials have urged residents to remain cautious while avoiding unnecessary panic. Further public health measures, if required, will be determined after confirmatory test results are received from the National Institute of Virology.
