Bhubaneswar: In an innovative initiative to promote breast cancer awareness, HCG Panda Cancer Hospital, Cuttack, in collaboration with the Airports Authority of India (AAI), organised a series of flash mob performances at Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar, to highlight the importance of early detection and timely medical consultation.
The awareness campaign, held at Terminal 1 of the airport, aimed to engage passengers, visitors and airport personnel through public performances and direct interactions with health experts. By taking the message beyond hospitals and healthcare facilities, the initiative sought to encourage conversations about breast health, routine screening and the early identification of warning signs.
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can significantly improve outcomes, making awareness and timely medical evaluation crucial. However, a lack of awareness, social stigma and hesitation to seek medical advice often prevent women from recognising symptoms and accessing healthcare at the right time.
The airport activation featured five flash mob performances during the morning, using music, rhythm and coordinated movements to draw public attention to the importance of breast cancer awareness. The performances were complemented by interactions between passengers and health educators, who shared information on preventive healthcare, breast self-awareness and routine medical check-ups.
Dr Smita Padhi, Chief Operating Officer of HCG Panda Cancer Hospital, Cuttack, interacted with members of the public as part of the initiative, helping bring essential health information into an everyday public space.
Emphasising the importance of making healthcare awareness accessible to all, Dr Padhi said that the responsibility of healthcare institutions extends beyond hospital premises to the places where people live, work and interact.
She noted that creative public engagement initiatives such as flash mobs can make health messages more approachable and memorable, helping replace fear and hesitation with awareness and informed decision-making. She also highlighted the role of the collaboration with AAI in transforming a routine airport arrival experience into an opportunity for public health education.
The initiative was organised in coordination with Prasanna Pradhan, Airport Director, and Umakant Patel, Deputy General Manager (Operations), at Bhubaneswar airport.
The collaboration highlighted the potential of public infrastructure and healthcare institutions to work together in reaching larger audiences with important health messages. Airports, with their high passenger footfall and diverse visitors, can serve as effective platforms for community awareness campaigns.
Health experts emphasise that women should be aware of changes in their breasts, including a new lump or thickening, changes in breast shape or size, skin dimpling, nipple changes or unusual discharge. Any such change should be evaluated by a qualified medical professional. Breast self-awareness can help women recognise changes, while age- and risk-appropriate screening and timely medical consultation remain important components of breast health.
Through this initiative, HCG Panda Cancer Hospital and the Airports Authority of India sought to encourage people to make breast health a priority and help build a more informed and health-conscious society.
The campaign reinforced a vital public health message: early detection, timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment can make a significant difference in the fight against breast cancer.
