Bhubaneswar: Advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques and the growing possibilities of complex procedures through a single keyhole were discussed at Swasthya Charcha, organised by Swasthya Sambad and Kanak News in collaboration with Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar.
The panel brought together experts from the Department of General, Laparoscopic & Bariatric Surgery, who highlighted how advancements in laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery are enabling doctors to perform complicated procedures through smaller incisions, reducing surgical trauma and supporting faster recovery.
The discussion featured Dr Saurajit Patnaik, Consultant – General Surgeon; Dr Lalatendu Mahapatra, Senior Consultant – General Surgeon; and Dr Ramyanjan Behera, Consultant General Surgeon.
Speaking on the evolving landscape of keyhole surgery, the surgeons explained that laparoscopic techniques have significantly transformed the approach to several complex surgical conditions. Procedures that traditionally required larger incisions can, in selected cases, now be performed using small ports or even a single access point, depending on the patient’s condition, the complexity of the disease and the surgeon’s assessment.
The experts also discussed the importance of precision in minimally invasive surgery, where advanced instruments, high-definition imaging and improved surgical expertise allow surgeons to operate in confined anatomical spaces. They emphasised that the choice between conventional and minimally invasive surgery is individualised, with patient safety and clinical outcomes remaining the primary considerations.
The panel also shed light on the potential benefits of minimally invasive approaches, including smaller surgical wounds, reduced postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays and an earlier return to routine activities. However, the surgeons stressed that complicated surgeries require careful patient selection, extensive expertise and appropriate infrastructure.
The session also highlighted the growing role of technology in modern surgery and how continuous advancements are expanding the scope of laparoscopic procedures beyond routine operations.
Adding another significant moment to the event, Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar was felicitated with the Centre of Excellence award for its contribution to advanced surgical care. The recognition underscored the hospital’s focus on specialised treatment, modern surgical techniques and multidisciplinary healthcare.
