A new study has suggested that people with autism may have a higher likelihood of developing psychosis compared to the general population, highlighting the importance of early mental health screening and timely support. Researchers, however, stress that the findings do not mean that autism causes psychosis, and most autistic individuals will never experience a psychotic disorder.

The study, published in a peer-reviewed medical journal, analysed data from thousands of participants to examine the relationship between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and psychotic illnesses such as schizophrenia. The researchers found that autistic individuals were significantly more likely to develop psychotic symptoms than those without autism.

Psychosis is a mental health condition that affects how a person perceives reality. It may involve hallucinations, delusions, disorganised thinking, and difficulty distinguishing what is real from what is not. Autism, on the other hand, is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by differences in social communication, behaviour, and sensory processing.

According to the researchers, several factors may contribute to the observed association. These include shared genetic influences, differences in brain development, and environmental factors. They also noted that autistic individuals often experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, social isolation, and chronic stress, which may increase vulnerability to mental health conditions.

Experts emphasise that some characteristics of autism—such as unusual communication patterns, rigid thinking, or sensory experiences—can sometimes resemble psychotic symptoms, making diagnosis more challenging. A careful clinical assessment is therefore essential to distinguish between the two conditions and ensure appropriate treatment.

Mental health specialists say recognising early warning signs of psychosis is crucial. Symptoms such as hearing or seeing things others do not, developing persistent false beliefs, increasing confusion, withdrawal from family and friends, or a sudden decline in daily functioning should prompt medical evaluation.

The authors believe the findings underscore the need for integrated healthcare services that address both developmental and mental health needs. Routine mental health assessments for autistic individuals, particularly during adolescence and early adulthood, could help identify those at risk and improve outcomes through early intervention.

The researchers also cautioned that the study demonstrates an association rather than a direct cause-and-effect relationship. More research is needed to understand the biological mechanisms behind the link and to identify which autistic individuals may be at the greatest risk.

Healthcare professionals advise families and caregivers not to interpret the findings as a reason for alarm. Instead, they encourage greater awareness of mental health, regular follow-up with healthcare providers, and prompt attention to any significant changes in behaviour or thinking.

As scientists continue to explore the complex relationship between autism and psychiatric disorders, the study adds to growing evidence that comprehensive, person-centred care is essential for improving the long-term wellbeing of autistic individuals.
