Appendicitis:-

Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix (a finger shaped pouch that projects from the caecum on the lower right side of the abdomen). It is the most common general surgical emergency worldwide. Acute appendicitis is the most common cause of acute abdomen.

Causes:-

Luminal obstruction by 

  1. Fecolith (Most common)
  2. Lymphoid hyperplasia
  3. Worm
  4. Foreign body

Pre-deposing factors:-

-Extremes of age

-Diabetes Mellitus

-Immunocompromised

-Previous abdominal surgery

-Pregnancy

Symptoms:-

  • Migratory pain (Most common)
  • Anorexia (Most consistent)
  • Nausea, Vomiting

Signs:-

Tenderness at right lower inguinal fossa (right lower abdomen)

-Rebound Tenderness

-Elevated Temperature (Fever)

Laboratory findings:-

-Leukocytosis

-Shift of WBC count to shift

Investigation of choice:-

-Children: Ultrasound

-Adults: CECT

Complications:-

-Rupture

-Perforation

-Sepsis

-Abscess

-Shock

Treatment:-

– Laparoscopic Appendicectomy
