Obesity has become one of the leading global health challenges, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting that more than 1 in 8 people worldwide are now affected by obesity. This alarming trend has seen adult obesity rates double since 1990, and it is now responsible for increasing health issues like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and certain cancers. Obesity is also contributing to significant socio-economic disparities, as it disproportionately affects lower-income populations.

In response, the WHO is advocating for stronger public health policies focused on diet regulation, urban planning, and education to curb obesity rates. The global health body is also pushing for the expansion of mental health and lifestyle support to address both the physical and psychological aspects of obesity. However, experts suggest that improving access to nutritious food and encouraging physical activity will be key in tackling this rising problem, with some regions already reporting success in these initiatives.

The statistics are particularly troubling for adolescents, as childhood obesity has skyrocketed, with a major rise in severe obesity cases. Solutions being explored include restricting the marketing of unhealthy foods, increasing access to affordable healthy food, and promoting physical activity in schools.
