Utkal Hospital, Bhubaneswar, has successfully performed a rare and life-saving surgery to reattach a completely amputated hand of a 25-year-old man at the mid-forearm level, marking a significant milestone in advanced reconstructive surgery in Odisha.
The incident occurred on January 25, 2026, at around 12 noon, when the young man met with a severe accident that resulted in the complete amputation of his right hand at the mid-forearm. He was immediately rushed to a reputed government hospital in the city, from where he was later referred to Utkal Hospital for advanced care. The patient was admitted to Utkal Hospital at around 1:00 pm on the same day.
Recognising the critical nature of the injury, senior plastic and cosmetic surgeon Dr. G. Aravind Mahapatra, along with his expert surgical team, promptly shifted the patient to the hospital’s state-of-the-art, world-class operation theatre. The highly complex reattachment surgery lasted nearly nine hours and was completed with extreme precision and caution.
The surgery was successful, and the patient is currently stable. He is recovering well and is expected to be discharged soon.
