In a rare and challenging surgical intervention, doctors at Utkal Hospital, a premier multispecialty hospital in Niladri Vihar, Bhubaneswar, successfully removed a plastic grip of a cycle handle from the stomach of a 13-year-old boy. The complex surgery was performed under the expert supervision of senior surgeon Dr. Gourav Das and his team.

The boy, a resident of Talcher, had reportedly met with an accident while riding a bicycle. During the incident, his friends tried to help by pulling out the handle, which had punctured his abdomen. He was initially rushed to a nearby health center where his external wounds were treated and stitched up. However, no internal investigation was carried out at that point.

After about a week, the boy began experiencing severe abdominal pain. His family brought him to Utkal Hospital for further examination. Based on the advice of Dr. Gourav Das, an MRI scan was conducted. To the medical team’s astonishment, the scan revealed that a plastic grip from the cycle handle had remained lodged inside his abdomen.

Without delay, Dr. Das and his surgical team conducted a critical surgery and successfully extracted the foreign object along with nearly 300 grams of pus that had formed due to the internal injury. The timely operation potentially saved the boy from life-threatening complications.

The patient is now under close observation and recovering under the care of Utkal Hospital’s specialist team.

The boy’s family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Gourav Das and his surgical team, as well as to the hospital leadership including Chairman Dr. Aditya Kumar Samal, Managing Director Dr. Pragyan Ranjan Gharai, CEO B.K. Subodh Singh, Director of Medical Services Dr. Ranjan Kumar Mohapatra, COO Manav and other senior directors of the hospital for their swift and compassionate support during the medical emergency.

This case stands as a testament to the importance of thorough diagnosis and timely surgical intervention in saving young lives.
