Utkal Hospital has scripted a new chapter in Odisha’s healthcare history by successfully performing the state’s first Dual Chamber Leadless Pacemaker implantation, Valve-in-Valve Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (ViV TAVI), and Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement (TMVR). These landmark procedures mark a significant leap forward in advanced and minimally invasive cardiac care in the state.
The achievements were accomplished by the expert team at the Utkal Institute of Cardiac Sciences, reaffirming the hospital’s position as a leading centre for complex and cutting-edge heart treatments. With these breakthroughs, patients in Odisha now have access to world-class cardiac interventions without the need to travel outside the state.
The Dual Chamber Leadless Pacemaker, implanted for the first time in Odisha at Utkal Hospital, represents a major advancement in pacing technology. Unlike conventional pacemakers, this device does not require surgical incisions or leads, thereby reducing the risk of complications and enabling faster recovery for patients.
In another milestone, the hospital successfully carried out Odisha’s first ViV TAVI and TMVR procedures, offering new hope to high-risk patients who are not suitable candidates for open-heart surgery. These complex structural heart interventions reflect the hospital’s robust infrastructure, advanced technology, and multidisciplinary expertise.
The procedures were led by a dedicated team of specialists, including senior cardiologists Dr. Sushant Pradhan, Dr. Manabhanjan Jena, Dr. Sanat Sahu, and Dr. B. B. Binakar, along with CTVS experts Dr. Chandrabhanu Parija and Dr. Jhulan Kumar Jena, and cardiac anaesthetist Dr. Biranchi Narayan Pratihari.
A press conference was organised to commemorate these achievements, during which the medical team highlighted the consistent success of Utkal Hospital’s Cardiology and Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery (CTVS) departments in performing complex angioplasties, structural heart procedures, minimally invasive surgeries, and hybrid cardiac treatments.
Addressing the media, Dr. Rashmi Ranjan Guru, Medical Superintendent of Utkal Hospital, emphasised that these advancements have significantly reduced the burden on patients who previously had to seek advanced cardiac care outside Odisha. He reiterated the hospital’s commitment to delivering global-standard healthcare closer to home.
With these historic milestones, Utkal Hospital continues to redefine cardiac care in Odisha, where innovation, expertise, and teamwork come together to save lives.
