Utkal Hospital has etched its name in the medical history of Odisha by successfully performing Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery for Parkinson’s disease, becoming the first corporate hospital in the state to offer this cutting-edge neurosurgical treatment. This breakthrough places the hospital among a select few advanced centers in India capable of providing such sophisticated therapy.

Deep Brain Stimulation is a highly specialized surgical procedure used to treat various neurological disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia, Tourette syndrome, and certain types of epilepsy. The technique involves the implantation of electrodes into specific areas of the brain, which are connected to a battery-powered pulse generator implanted in the chest. The device delivers constant electrical impulses to regulate abnormal brain activity, often resulting in significant improvement in motor function and quality of life.

While DBS has been performed in Odisha before, Utkal Hospital’s approach marks a significant leap forward. This is the first time in the state that the latest-generation directional electrodes have been used in combination with AI-enabled BrainSense™ technology. This advanced system allows doctors to monitor brain signals in real time and fine-tune the stimulation with remarkable precision, thereby optimizing outcomes and minimizing side effects.

The landmark procedure was carried out on a 40-year-old patient suffering from advanced Parkinson’s disease. Plagued by debilitating motor symptoms and a severely compromised quality of life, the patient underwent the surgery successfully and was discharged on September 1. The implanted device will be activated in three weeks, after which doctors expect to see a dramatic improvement in symptoms.

The success of the surgery is credited to a highly skilled and multidisciplinary team at Utkal Hospital, whose collaboration and expertise were crucial in making this breakthrough possible. Hospital leadership hailed the achievement as a transformative moment in the state’s healthcare landscape, calling it “a new chapter in Odisha’s healthcare journey, bringing hope to patients suffering from complex neurological disorders.”

This development holds far-reaching implications for patients in Odisha. Until now, individuals requiring DBS had to travel to metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, or Bengaluru—often incurring significant financial and emotional strain. With Utkal Hospital now offering this advanced treatment locally, access to world-class neurosurgical care has become more feasible and affordable. Moreover, with increasing coverage through private insurance and government health schemes, the procedure is gradually becoming accessible to a wider group of patients.

The successful DBS surgery at Utkal Hospital is not just a medical milestone, it is a symbol of the evolving healthcare infrastructure in Odisha, one that is now equipped to meet the most complex neurological challenges with innovation, expertise, and compassion.
