The first Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) has been successfully performed at the state’s premier super multi-specialty Utkal Hospital in Niladrivihar, Bhubaneswar.

The patient, a woman, aged 59, was experiencing chest pain and dizziness due to Aortic Stenosis for several days. She was also a cancer patient, so surgical valve replacement was risky in her case. Valve replacement by TAVI was the only option for the patient.

In this way, the damaged aortic valve is treated non-surgically by implanting a new bioprosthetic valve over the old damaged valve.

This is an advanced method where a new valve is inserted into the valve through the vein in the leg. This procedure does not require a chest incision or general anesthesia. After the treatment, the patient can walk or do its regular chores after 10 to 12 hours and can be discharged in 2 to 3 days.

This state-of-the-art procedure was successfully performed by Dr. Susanta Pradhan, Senior Interventional Cardiologist at Utkal Hospital and his team with Dr. Anjan Das. The patient was discharged from the hospital today.

For this milestone, the chairman of the hospital Dr. Aditya Samal, Managing Director Pragyan Ranjan Ghadei, Director Medical Services, Dr. Ranjan Kumar Mohapatra, C.O.O. Mr. Manav expressed their gratitude to everyone involved in the procedure.
