In a landmark event, Utkal Hospital in Bhubaneswar witnessed its first-ever organ donation, marking a significant step towards saving lives through organ transplantation in Odisha. The doner named Bikash Kumar Sahoo, a 31-year-old resident of Dalatola, Khordha, was admitted to Utkal Hospital following a stroke due to a right-side brain bleed. Despite the tireless efforts of the medical team led by Director of Neurosurgery Dr Sidharth S. Sahoo, along with Dr Biswa Bikas Mohanty and Dr Randhir Mitra, he was declared Brain-dead.
Following the declaration, the patient’s family made a selfless and courageous decision to donate his organs, giving a new lease on life to others in need. His liver was successfully transplanted to a patient suffering from liver cirrhosis. The complex liver transplant procedure was led by Dr. Satya Prakash Choudhury and his dedicated team at Utkal Hospital.
In a touching tribute, ex MLA Bhubaneswar north Priyadarshi Mishra, Dr Siddhartha Shankar Sahoo, Dr Ranadhir Mitra, Dr Biswa Bikash Mohanty, Dr.Akash Gupta, Head Business development Subash Chandra Pati and the entire staff and authority of Utkal Hospital paid their final respects to the deceased. Flowers were offered to the body, and the hospital staff formed a human chain in honour of the departed soul. In recognition of the noble act, the Odisha Police also extended a Guard of Honour to the deceased person.
