Odisha is grappling with a significant surge in substance use, particularly among its youth. Recent studies indicate that approximately 37% of individuals aged 10 to 24 in the state engage in some form of substance use, surpassing the national average of 32.8%. Alarmingly, two-thirds of these individuals initiate substance use before reaching adulthood. Common substances include tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, inhalants, and opioids.

The consequences of this rising trend are profound. Substance abuse is closely linked to a range of health issues. Oral health problems, such as dental caries, periodontitis, and oral infections like candidiasis and gingivitis, are prevalent among drug users. These conditions arise due to both the direct effects of substances and the indirect consequences of behaviors associated with drug use.

In response to this crisis, the Odisha government has initiated several measures. An eight-month-long state-wide awareness campaign was launched to combat tobacco use, spurious liquor, and drug abuse. This campaign aims to reach every household, promoting a healthy lifestyle and raising awareness about the dangers of substance use.

Furthermore, the government has committed to establishing de-addiction centers in every district, allocating Rs 20 crore for this initiative. These centers will focus on education, treatment, rehabilitation, and social inclusion of individuals affected by substance use.

Despite these efforts, challenges persist. The rising number of substance users, particularly among the youth, underscores the need for continued and enhanced interventions. The government’s initiatives are a step in the right direction, but sustained efforts and community involvement are essential to address this growing public health concern effectively.
