The continuing Mpox epidemics in the Congo and other parts of Africa, formerly known as monkeypox, have been deemed a worldwide emergency by the World Health Organisation. The Union Health Ministry of India claims that there is a “very low” chance of a spike in mpx cases in the nation.

According to news agency PTI, which cited government sources in the health ministry, the latest instance of mpox in India was recorded in March of this year and was said to have originated from Kerala. Thirty cases of this virus with laboratory confirmation have been reported from India since 2022.

“At the moment, the risk of a surge in monkeypox infection is very low in India, and there is no need to panic,” a person aware of the development was quoted as saying by the news agency.

The health ministry may send recommendations to ports of entry, such as airports, in reaction to the worldwide situation, directing them to be watchful and ready to handle suspected cases in accordance with established protocols. The recommendations ensure a comprehensive approach to illness prevention by providing specific methods for treatment, contact tracking, and isolation to prevent any possible transmission.

According to the 2022 recommendations released by India for the management of mpox, the main mode of transmission from person to person is through big respiratory droplets that necessitate prolonged close contact. In addition, the virus can spread indirectly through contaminated linen or clothing and directly by contact with human fluids or lesion material.
