Kidneys are bean-shaped organs located below the rib cage, that help in waste removal and filtration of blood in the body.

Functions of Kidney

  1. Balances blood pressure in the body.
  2. Helps in the production of R.B.C.
  3. An active form of Vitamin D which produces Calcium and Phosphorous is absorbed by the Kidneys & helps in healthy bones.
  4. Balances the PH.
  5. Balances fluid in the body.
  6. Removes the metabolic waste material.
  7. Balances electrolyte.
  8. Balances minerals in the body.

Who is more prone to Kidney diseases?

  • Diabetic patients.
  • UTI (Urinary tract Infection) Patients.
  • Hypertension
  • People taking excessive painkillers.
  • People consume some health supplements without proper advice from experts like- Protein powder.
  • Houses where the quantity of Lead and fluoride is high in tap water.

How can we control primary Kidney diseases through diet?

  • Lower the protein intake- 0.5-0.7gms of protein per Kg body weight.
  • High-calorie intake- 35-40 kilo calories per kg body weight(2000-2500 calorie intake)
  • Fat intake- 10-15% of calorie intake
  • To balance Sodium & Potassium- 2-5 gm of salt intake. No extra salt in food.

To keep the Potassium in balance- always peel off the vegetables, then blanch them once, and then cook them.

  • To balance Calcium & Phosphorous – Milk and milk products to be consumed within  250ml in a day
  • Remove the big seeds from big seeded vegetables like Bitter gourd, Pointed gourd, etc.
  • Strictly no red meat due to high protein levels.
  • Lower down Protein intake- 150 gm boiled rice will have 10 gm protein, 20 gm dal will have – 5 gm protein, 1 egg white- 6 gm protein, 1 pc Rohu fish(freshwater fish)50 gm – 5 gm protein, 30 gm of chole/rajma – 5-6 gm protein, Milk-6-7 gm protein= Total 30 gm protein. Total protein intake in a day should be 30 gm. You shouldn’t decrease protein intake more than that to avoid anemia.
  • Green leafy vegetables (Saag) – Quit Spinach, Moringa, Malabar Spinach, Chutneys (Coriander & Mint). Red and green Amaranth can be taken after the leaching process.
  • No tomato
  • No mushroom
  • Quit Egg yolk(yellow part)
  • Oil- 6 teaspoons a day
  • Water to be consumed in a day should be calculated- Amount of urine per day +500 ml water

End-stage Kidney failure- Dialysis.
