What is Hernia?

A hernia happens when an internal organ of the body protrudes through tissues or muscles that normally contain it. It is mostly seen in the abdominal cavity area. It is seen both in men and women. One should see a surgeon for a hernia problem.

Causes

It is mostly caused by weak muscles, pressure, or strain. Strains from physical exertion, strain due to frequent coughing, strain due to constipation, etc can cause a hernia.

Types

  1. Inguinal hernia- bladder or intestine protrudes through the abdominal wall into the inguinal canal.
  2. Incisional hernia- the intestine protrudes through the abdominal wall or a pre-surgical site.
  3. Umbilical hernia- most common in newborns. Part of the small intestine passes through the abdominal wall near the navel.
  4. Femoral hernia- occurs when the intestine enters the canal carrying the femoral artery into the upper thigh.
  5. Hiatal hernia- upper stomach squeezes through the hiatus.
