Spondylitis is a type of inflammatory arthritis that primarily affects the spine, causing pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. It can lead to the fusion of vertebrae over time, resulting in a rigid and less flexible spine. The most common form is ankylosing spondylitis (AS), which mainly impacts the lower back and sacroiliac joints.

Symptoms of Spondylitis:

  • Chronic back pain and stiffness, especially in the morning or after inactivity
  • Reduced flexibility and range of motion
  • Fatigue due to inflammation
  • In severe cases, spinal deformities

Causes & Risk Factors:

  • Genetics: The HLA-B27 gene is associated with a higher risk of ankylosing spondylitis
  • Autoimmune response: The immune system mistakenly attacks the joints in the spine
  • Lifestyle factors: Poor posture and a sedentary lifestyle can contribute to worsening symptoms

Treatment & Management:

  • Medications: NSAIDs, biologics, and DMARDs can help reduce inflammation
  • Physical Therapy: Exercises and stretches to improve mobility
  • Posture correction: Maintaining proper posture reduces strain on the spine
  • Lifestyle changes: A healthy diet and regular exercise can help manage symptoms
